This theatre was the vision of Mr. Monroe "Pink" Bowers Morton. Mr. Morton was a building contractor and built the Morton building that housed the Morton Theatre and, offices for doctors and dentists. The building also housed a drug store on the ground floor. Mr. Charles Douglass and his wife saw a need for black people in his home town of Macon, Georgia. to have a place that they could go to and witness the best entertainment around so Mr. and Mrs. Douglass started the Douglass Theatre that became a social main stage in the black community. From the 1920s onward the Douglass Theater hosted films by filmmaker Oscar Micheaux. Some of the films were Body and Soul, and the Bessie Smith classic, St. Louis Blues. The Octoberfest in Helen, Georgia has been going on for 53 years. It is the longest running Octoberfest in the United States.
